The A-Z Countdown is such a fun way to countdown until summer! This week we had extra fun outside, dressed our best, looked fantastic in green, rocked some amazing hats, and enjoyed a yummy frozen treat!

STEM: Ice Cream in a Bag

Have you ever tried making ice cream in a bag? It is a super fun activity and kids love it of course! The process seems magical and it never fails to impress. To begin the activity the kids completed a procedure writing worksheet - filling in action verbs and putting the steps in order! After they completed the worksheet, the kids took turns shaking the bag and counting to 100 by 5's! After the students each got a turn to shake the bag, they were able to taste the final product. They all agreed - ice cream in a bag is amazing! We then all enjoyed a small bowl of (store-bought) ice cream while watching videos on the history of ice cream!

Literacy: Long & Short Vowels

During this activity, the kids searched in books for words and practiced identifying if the vowels were long or short.

Opinion Writing: The Best Pet

The goal of opinion writing is to guide the students from recognizing opinions, to verbalizing opinions, and to supporting and writing about their opinions. This week the kids were encouraged to pick an animal that think would be the best pet and explain why.

This week, Roycemore students participated in an annual event hosted by the YMCA - Stand Against Racism. To prepare for the event, the students had discussions in class and created posters to share their messages. Here's a quick look at a previous Stand Against Racism event where Roycemore students encouraged drivers to "honk for justice" and reminded us that "everyone should be treated equally."

Earth Day, which is celebrated on April 22nd each year, is a day to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment. This week, many of our activities focused on teaching the kids what Earth Day is about and helping them understand how to respect and care for animal and plant life, natural resources, and their habitats. Even at a young age, children can be part of making the Earth a healthier planet!

STEM Challenge: Design and build a robot that will help the Earth!

After learning about different ways to help the environment, the kindergarten kids were encouraged to pick one problem (too much liter, oil in the ocean, etc) and then design and build a robot that can fix that problem.

PE: Nature Scavenger Hunt

Literacy: Read & Respond to "Hotel Bruce"

After reading the story, the kids had the opportunity to respond to a specific reading strategy with writing and drawing. The reading strategy we focused on for this story was - "Readers find the trouble in books."

Literacy: Read and Respond to "Dragons Love Tacos 2"
